#MeghanRocks - a legacy project

Mattie’s Peace Foundation works with VisArts and UpCounty Community Resources (UCR) to celebrate the legacy of Meghan Jones – who passed away in 2025 following a brief illness.
Meghan, well-known for her “I love life!” attitude, was on the Board of Directors for UCR and volunteer for many community activities – including those hosted by Mattie’s Foundation.
Born with Down syndrome, Meghan as a strong advocate for those with disabilities, and she was a welcoming presence for ALL community members.
The #MeghanLegacy Project is an annual activity to commemorate her spirit, and also her love for Mattie. During February (her birthday month), legacy rocks are painted in her honor. During July (Mattie’s birthday month), the rocks are placed in the Peace Garden of the Mattie Stepanek Park.
Visitors who find a rock can learn more about Meghan with the QR code on the back of each rock, which brings people to this website.

2025 Events

Mattie’s Peace Foundation – in partnership with Upcounty Community Resources (UCR), VisArts, and #RockvillePeaceRocks – is launching a legacy project to honor the late community leader, Meghan Jones.

The first gathering for Meghan’s friends and local community members who worked or played with her took place on Wednesday, June 25, during the 7 pm UCR/VisArts class (on Gibbs Street).

This event was for those who danced or sang or did art with Meghan, and for colleagues and community leaders who worked with her on advocacy projects and efforts.

Participants for this event did not need to be registered for the class to come and paint a rock in Meghan’s honor.

Following this event, participants gathered at Lebanese Taverna for conversation and “June birthdays” cake.

During the July 17 (5-8 pm) “Toast2Peace on Peace Day” celebration at World of Beer in Rockville – all community members are welcome to join us for another opportunity to paint a rock for the #MeghanRocks legacy project.
