Plans are underway for the first annual Cornhole for Peace Tournament – hosted by the Mattie Stepanek Peace Foundation

The games will be part of the 2026 Peace Day celebration – an event that draws hundreds of community members and leaders each summer.

Tommy McFly – who returns as the event emcee – will be matching tournament registration fees to double much-needed financial support for Mattie’s Peace Foundation.

One of the two cornhole sponsorship options has already been secured by Lafayette Federal Credit Union – a business that is ready to meet and greet (and perhaps beat in a game 😉 other sponsors, participants, and event celebrants.

The final round of the tournament will played just before the Peace Day Proclamation program – with winners joining elected leaders, sponsors, entertainers, and other VIPs on-stage for a community “Toast2Peace.”

Mattie’s Peace Foundation continues the mission of late teen poet and peace ambassador – Mattie J.T. Stepanek – who reminds us of the important matters of “peace, purpose, and play.”

Although he struggled with neuromuscular disease throughout his “almost 14 years” of life, Mattie chose to embrace and encourage positivity which exuded his personal philosophy:

“Remember to play after every storm!”

Since its creation in 2005, the Foundation has offered resources and activities that cultivate peace through education, recreation, and a celebration of life and community.

The City of Rockville, Montgomery County, and the State of Maryland all proclaim his July birthday “Peace Day” – and join the Foundation in a “party with a purpose” each year.
