An Afternoon of Community & Celebration
Members of the Upcounty Community Resources (UCR) and Main Street Connect joined Mama Peace to place #Meghan Rocks and #PeaceDragonRocks in Mattie’s Peace Garden.
For more than 20 years, Mattie’s Foundation has been using #PeaceRocks activities as a resource for encouraging youth and adults to reflect on the power of choice in the use of tools – including words and art and rocks.
The #MeghanRocks Legacy Project honors the late Meghan Jones – a community leader and advocate for those with developmental disabilities. Meghan, who had Down syndrome, served on the Board of Directors for UCR and was a welcoming and joyful presence across the state of Maryland.
The #PeaceDragonRocks is a new project initiated by the recently Peace Certified Trianna Beckwith and her business – Rockville Peace Rocks – one of Mattie’s Foundation Partners4Peace. The hundreds of rocks that make up the peace dragon were painted by youth and adults across recent months during community events – and symbolize power, wisdom, good fortune, and imagination.
#MeghanRocks are painted by her friends and community members during February – Meghan’s birth month. During July – Mattie’s birthday month – the #MeghanRocks are placed in community – from the Rockville Town Square where Meghan lived and celebrated life to Mattie’s Park & Peace Garden and other spaces. Each rock has a QR code on the back taking “finders” to our webpage where they can learn more about #PeaceRocks and Meghan’s life and legacy.
All are welcome to participate
in our community #PeaceRocks activities.
